The first insect approved as a food source
New scenarios for livestock and human nutrition
The European Commission has authorized the use of the flour moth (Tenebrio molitor) for food purposes.
The insect, which has no contraindications for human health, represents an alternative protein source and can be eaten whole (dried) or as an ingredient for snacks, flours or condiments
Although the sector is still a market niche at a European level, EFSA (European Food Safety Authority) is also considering approval for 11 other insect species.
